We’ve put together some simple tips to help you perform better in the interviews you attend.
Interviews are designed for companies to assess your suitability for a job in more detail than can ever be put in your resume. They will be making a lot of decisions including whether you have the right attitude to work, how you will fit into their company or team and whether your skills and experience are right for the vacancy they have. You need to be able to show all these things in a limited amount of time and leave the Interviewer with the impression – ‘This is the person I need!’
Some tips to help you succeed in your interview…
- Be positive and enthusiastic. You need to show them you can do the job, that you want the job and that you will fit in. A firm handshake is a great start and eye contact shows you are confident
- Make sure you write down the address and time of the interview. It’s a great idea to try and be 10-15 minutes early so you can relax before you go inside
- Ensure you know the person’s full name and their title. Its good to know if they will be your manager (should you get the role), so you can develop a good rapport with them in the interview
- You should do some research about the company you want to work for, so if you have access to the internet have a look at their website before your interview
- Dress appropriately for the interview – For any office work – a suit is the best attire for both males and females. If you are going to a worksite/factory for your interview, ensure you are neat and tidy
- An interview is a chance for you to decide whether this is somewhere you’d like to work. Think of the questions you’d like to ask about the company or job. Some ideas are listed below
- Stick to the point! When you are asked a question it’s good to give a direct answer and try not to go off the topic too much
- Turn off your mobile before you enter the building
- Show warmth and honesty so that the interviewer feels comfortable with you
- Bring a copy of your resume and portfolio (if relevant)
- Don’t smoke or chew gum in the interview
- Double check your hygiene – body odour is an enormous put off in an interview
- Interviewers may expect you to give examples of past behaviours – be prepared
- Get clarification – if you don’t understand a question, ask them to repeat it. You have a better shot at giving your best answer if you know exactly what the interviewer is trying to ask
- Don’t lie – be up front about any mistakes you’ve made in the past

- What’s the most challenging part of this role?

- How long would it take someone to learn this role?
- What is the company culture like?
Before you leave the interview…
- Find out their next step of the interview process and when they think they will make a decision
- Be sure to tell them if you are still interested in the position
- Always end the interview with a firm handshake
- Thank the interviewer for their time
